“The most audacious feat of endurance ever attempted on New Zealand soil…”

FIFTY – The Movie is a 90 minute documentary that follows Mal Law’s bold attempt to run 50 mountain marathons over 50 peaks in just 50 days. Mal set out to raise an enormous amount of money for the Mental Health Foundation.

“The Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand is a charity that works towards creating a society free from discrimination, where all people enjoy positive mental health & wellbeing”

With the direct link between exercise and mental health, Mal’s big hairy audacious goal was the prefect challenge to raise awareness and funding for the Mental Health Foundation. The documentary is every bit as unique and epic as the adventure itself. It is a work of great power and beauty that perfectly captures the ups and downs, both literal and figurative, of what was billed.

“Creating FIFTY – The Movie was a Marathon in itself!”

It was clear that the High Five-0 Challenge for Mental Health was an epic story. And I saw it as my duty as the filmmaker to make sure FIFTY did justice to Mal’s extreme mission and the epic tale that unfolded.

When I finally sat down in the editing room, I had 3.5 Terabytes of footage to work with. I could have told this story an infinite number of ways. First of all, I wanted to do more than just document going up and down mountains every day. I needed to showcase the community that surrounded the challenge as well as the beauty of New Zealand. The documentary also needed to bring down the taboo around mental health. I wanted to convey the message that getting out there and being active is a great way to improve our mental wellbeing.

After weeks of filming and months of editing, I am very happy with what we have created. I hope this inspires people to take on big challenges of their own. I also hope people realise that mental health is just like our physical health. We all have it, and if we don’t look after it we can have problems. However, just like a physical issue, mental issues can often be put right with the right course of action.

It has truly been an honour creating this film, working with so many fantastic people. I thank everyone for sharing their stories along the way.
